The 1+1 Box Roll jacket and Kite wrap are based on Heather Martin’s 1+1 Modular Pattern Cutting System – a zero-waste, closed-loop design method that scales a single shape into a variety of silhouettes by repeating and assembling that shape into a complete garment. The system works with regular lengths of new cloth, end rolls, and textile waste. Much like Lego, the patterns offer a canvas for experimenting with upcycling, patchwork, or boro fabrications, and can easily be disassembled and reassembled into a new garment or accessory. Note that the method differs significantly from traditional garment-making, and no paper patterns are included. The jacket has an oversized fit that suits all body types and can easily be lengthened or shortened. The wrap references a shawl, scarf, or gilet – a versatile layering piece that can be worn in various ways. Both designs come in three sizes.

Fabric Recommendations:
Choose medium-weight fabrics, such as wool, cotton, hemp, or linen. Using boiled wool or other non-fraying textiles will simplify seam finishes on the 1+1 Box Roll jacket. The 1+1 Kite wrap is fully doubled, so seam finishing is not required.Bear in mind that thicker fabrics can make matching seams more challenging as layers build up at the seam allowances.
To make a more durable or weather-resistant version, consider using repurposed canvas, denim or waxed cotton. When working with scraps, aim to combine fabrics of a similar weight. Alternatively, you can mix different weights of fabric intentionally to create contrast and a more expressive result.
