Crafted from a secondhand patchwork quilt, the Janie design celebrates the spirit of circular creativity at the heart of this issue. An existing quilt is carefully reimagined as a garment, allowing its pieced blocks, soft texture, and years of use to become part of a new story.

Janie is designed for comfort and adaptability, featuring a relaxed fit, an elastic waistband, back patch pockets, and a curved hem. The project invites makers to work with reclaimed textiles or other woven fabrics, ensuring that each creation tells a unique story about its materials.

A second variation transforms the design into cropped trousers, providing a versatile option for everyday wear. The cropped trousers are a straightforward project suitable for confident beginners, while the jogger shorts require a little more attention due to their bound curved hems and overlapping side openings.

Rooted in resourcefulness, this design proves that thoughtful reuse can transform everyday textiles into striking, wearable pieces.

Fabric Recommendations:
To embrace the design’s circular approach, use a secondhand patchwork quilt for the quilted shorts. The shorts can also be sewn from almost any woven fabric, making the pattern equally suitable for cotton, linen, or other light to medium- weight materials. The trousers work beautifully in soft, medium-weight fabrics, such as cotton flannel, creating a relaxed silhouette with warmth and comfort. Wool flannel, brushed cotton, or similar fabrics are also excellent choices.
